Residents and environmentalists are demanding that the government put an end to the open-cast gold mining project near the town of Famatina, in northwest Argentina. The governor of the region temporarily suspended the project due to ongoing resistance from residents who worry the project will contaminate the water. Gold mining methods require large explosions, huge volumes of water, and the use of cyanide to extract the mineral. (AP Photo/Natacha Pisarenko)
